Jamie Benn and Miles Woods land bombs in epic tilt

Despite a strong start to the season, it appears that Jamie Benn isn’t too impressed with the play of his team as of late. The Dallas Stars kicked off the year with a four-game home stand where they went 3-1-0 before a surprising 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre on Monday night.

Down 3-0 to the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Centre on Tuesday, the Stars’ captain decided to send a message to his squad. He grabbed Miles Wood and traded fists in one of the best bouts of the young 2018-19 campaign.

Talk about a spirited affair between a couple of 6’2 forwards. Although Benn had a 20 pound advantage on Wood and landed a few good shots early, you have to admire the feisty young Devil for hanging in there. Emotions were running high as neither opponent wanted the fight to end. Both Wood and Benn fell to their knees at different times during the exchange of knuckles, got up and continued to swing.

According to hockeyfights.com, it was the ninth bout in Wood’s career. He’s a guy known for stirring it up a bit though – the 23-year-old has picked up more than 80 penalty minutes in each of his first two NHL seasons.

Meanwhile, for Benn, this was the 23rd tilt. As an enormous offensive contributor for his side, I’m sure that Dallas’ head coach Jim Montgomery was holding his breath while watching the fireworks on the ice.

Naming a winner in this one is tough as it ended up being pretty even. Upon further inspection though, it doesn’t matter. If you watch the end of the clip, you see Benn appear to yell ‘let’s go’ to his team’s bench. He wanted to provide a spark for his squad and attempt to help get them out of the mini slump that they’re currently in.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t successful as the Devils kept the Stars off the scoresheet the rest of the way to secure the 3-0 victory.

It looks like it will take more than a few fiery punches to get Dallas back on track.
