James Cameron’s sequel to ‘Avatar’ is now aiming for a Christmas release in 2017, the director has now confirmed.

The long-awaited follow up to the highest-grossing film of all time will be the first of three new movies in the 'Avatar’ storyworld.

“Christmas of ’17 is the target…At least, that’s what we’ve announced,” Cameron told the Montreal Gazette, after being nabbed at the premiere of the 'Avatar’-inspired Cirque Du Soliel show 'Toruk: The First Flight’.

“But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.

“We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. [We’ve finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see.

“The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year,”

Cameron has been out of the movie business working on the follow ups to his ground-breaking sci-fi blockbuster since 2009.

The movie, which 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ now has in its sights, holds the record for the highest box office receipts of all time.

It made $2.78 billion (£1.8 billion).
