Jake Gyllenhaal just set the record straight on reports that he doesn't shower

In some of the weirder celebrity moments from 2021, Jake Gyllenhaal hit headlines earlier in the year after comments made by the actor bizarrely suggested that he was cutting back on showering.

The quotes sparked plenty of discussion online, with stars including Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher also chiming in on the bathing debate.

However, now, Jake has stepped forward to set the record straight, confirming that he does shower and claiming that his comments were in fact "sarcastic".

Appearing at a recent screening of his upcoming Netflix film The Guilty, Jake addressed the reports, telling attendees: "I don’t know what it was. I answered a question where I was being sarcastic and ironic, and it’s followed me around."

"Unfortunately, I showered before I came here," he added, joking, "So… I’m sorry."

Well, there you have it then.

The internet's obsession with Jake's showing habits arose after the actor revealed to Vanity Fair that he found bathing to be "less necessary" in an interview back in August.

He told the publication, "More and more I find bathing to be less necessary, at times," while ironically appearing as the face of Prada's Luna Rossa Ocean fragrance.

He continued, "I do believe, because Elvis Costello is wonderful, that good manners and bad breath get you nowhere. So I do that. But I do also think that there’s a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves."

The comments sparked an internet-wide debate on celebrity hygiene, with stars including Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis coming forward to say they only bathed their children when they could see the dirt on them.

Ashton explained at the time, "Now, here's the thing: If you can see the dirt on them, clean them. Otherwise, there's no point."

The actor went on to discuss his own showering habits during an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, saying, "I wash my armpits and my crotch daily, and nothing else ever. I got a bar of Lever 2000 that delivers every time. Nothing else."

He continued, "I do have a tendency to throw some water on my face after a workout to get all the salts out," with wife Mila adding, "I do wash my face twice a day."

We're glad Jake's set the record straight on that one.
