Core inflation eases in December: The areas where costs remain high
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported core inflation to have cooled in December, the first easing since July 2024. While the Consumer Price Index (CPI) saw prices come in line with estimates, core CPI — which excludes food and energy costs — rose just 0.2% from the previous month and 3.2% year-over-year, below expectations. Wealth host Brad Smith is joined by Yahoo Finance senior report Alexandra Canal to discuss a variety of price trends seen in the latest CPI print, including increases in gas prices, elevated shelter and housing costs, food and groceries, and even airfare costs. Luxury groups pin hopes on US as China weakness persists
Global luxury goods companies are expected to pull out all the stops this year to persuade U.S. shoppers to splash out on diamond bracelets, quilted leather handbags and other designer fashions, given forecasts for more market weakness in China. Retail executives are looking to tap into wealth in the United States linked to the strong stock market and rise in cryptocurrencies, while potential tariffs from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump could support the dollar, raising Americans' purchasing power for European luxury goods. U.S. credit card spending on luxury brands in December improved, turning positive for the first time in more than two years, rising 1% year-on-year, based on data from Citi, thanks to better sales of leather goods and clothing.

John Ratcliffe, Trump's CIA pick, tells senators the agency is 'not where we’re supposed to be'
President-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the CIA told senators during his confirmation hearing Wednesday that the nation's premier spy agency must do a better job of staying ahead of global threats posed by Russia, China and other adversaries. John Ratcliffe, who served as director of national intelligence during Trump's first term, told lawmakers that if confirmed, he would push the agency to do more to harness technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing while also expanding the agency's use of human intelligence collection. “We’re not where we’re supposed to be,” Ratcliffe told the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Fed officials say latest inflation data helpful as they await Trump policies
ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (Reuters) -Federal Reserve officials said data released on Wednesday showed U.S. inflation was continuing to ease even as they noted heightened uncertainty in the coming months as they await a first glimpse of the incoming Trump administration's policies. The final read on the Consumer Price Index for 2024, closing out the Biden administration and its battle with a pandemic-related breakout of fast-rising prices, showed price increases excluding food and energy costs eased to 3.2% in December from 3.3% in the prior month. With the pace of housing inflation notably in decline, economists expect an upcoming report on the separate Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index for December to be weak, perhaps even falling below the Fed's 2% target.

Israel and Hamas agree historic Gaza ceasefire deal after 15 months of war
Israel and Hamas have agreed an historic ceasefire to end 15 months of war in Gaza, The Independent understands, a conflict in which almost 50,000 people have been killed and has threatened to draw the whole of the Middle East in. The truce and hostage deal was reached after the prime minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, meting with Hamas negotiators and then separately the Israelis. Triggered by a bloody attack by Hamas inside southern Israel on 7 October in which around 1,200 people were killed and another 250 were taken hostage, Israel's retaliatory bombardment of Gaza has left more than 46,000 Palestinians dead, the majority women and children according to Palestinian officials.

US bans use of Red No.3 dye in food, drugs over potential cancer links
The ban by the Food and Drug Administration on the dye, called Red No. 3, in food items comes more than three decades after it was barred in cosmetics. Consumer advocacy groups have been pushing for its ban for several years, including a petition in 2022 to review studies that show high exposure to the additive may cause cancer in male rats. "The FDA cannot authorize a food additive or color additive if it has been found to cause cancer in humans or animals," said Jim Jones, Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods.
