Jack Black has boarded the Minecraft movie.

With director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) raring to shoot his cinematic take on the Mojang/Microsoft gaming sensation for Warner Bros, Vertigo and Legendary Pictures, Deadline now reports that the School of Rock actor is playing Steve.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's Jason Momoa, Peacemaker's Danielle Brooks and Wednesday's Emma Myers are also in the cast.

Over on Instagram this week, Black referenced his involvement by posting a snapshot of himself browsing the pages of 2022 guidebook Minecraft Basics for Dummies.

"An actor prepares," he captioned it.

First released in 2009, the eponymous sandbox game now holds the proud title of best-selling video game in history, boasting close to an extraordinary 140 million monthly players and 300 million copies sold worldwide.

In it, players can build their own 3D worlds using colourful blocks by mining materials and fashioning items, but it's currently unclear what storyline the movie will explore.

This Minecraft adaptation is the latest in a string of failed efforts; the previous one being in the hands of Metal Lords director Peter Sollett.

A blog entry on the project's official website read in 2019: "We'll tell you the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.

"Sounds ambitious! Luckily, the very talented director Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist) will be making sure everyone stands in the right place and delivers award-worthy performances. No pressure!"

Will Hess offer something similar?

Minecraft is due to be released in cinemas on April 4, 2025.
