I've Worn Sarah Jessica Parker's Favorite Shoe Trend for 7 Days Straight, and It's My New Go-To

When I interviewed Alexa Chung a couple years ago, I wore Mary Janes. Why? Because in my eyes, that's the fashion girl equivalent of wearing your favorite team's sports jersey to a home game. The shoe defines Chung's iconic style, and my devotion to them is just one of the many ways I express my love for her. She's one of the first people who made me fall in love with getting dressed, and wearing Mary Janes made me feel like maybe one day I could be a tenth as cool as she is.

While Mary Janes are no doubt timeless and have been etched in style history, in large part due to Chung, they haven't been on my radar for a while. Like most people, I tend to grow tired of a piece after wearing it on repeat, and while I always knew I'd come back to my Mary Janes eventually, they've been collecting dust in my closet. That is, until I laid eyes on the Charles & Keith x Shushu/Tong collaboration, which featured the most perfect Mary Jane shoe I've ever seen.

They're so glorious, I'm absolutely positive Alexa Chung would wear hers with a perfectly worn-in pair of vintage Levi 501s and a Peter Pan collar top while sitting front row at London Fashion Week. I mean, when have you ever seen an asymmetrical rose design on a Mary Jane before? Shushu/Tong continues to be one of the most incredible new designers on the scene, and Charles & Keith somehow always manages to make the best shoes at unheard of prices.

After I received my pair as a gift from the brand, I proceeded to wear it for a whole week straight. Like almost every pair of Mary Janes I own, they're extremely comfortable, and dress up an outfit without making it look too formal. Mary Janes add a je nais se qua worthy of Chung to any look without sacrificing comfort, which is likely why they're trending again.

Sarah Jessica Parker is famously a fan of the trend, which we dubbed Babydoll shoes last year because they're the type of shoes your mom likely made you wear to formal events before you could talk. But Zoe Kravitz also likes them, which means they're extremely cool for grown-ups too. Naturally, Bella Hadid has hopped on the trend as well, and most recently wore a pair by Proenza Schouler with vintage John Paul Gaultier while out in New York City.

I'm fully ready for another Mary Jane moment, and have been stocking up accordingly. Currently I'm lusting after a couple pairs by Miu Miu, which pains my wallet. But while I wait for someone to hopefully buy them for my birthday in a couple weeks, I'll absolutely be scooping up some of the more affordable pairs at Nordstrom that look far more expensive than they are. These Trotters Mary Jane flats feel very Chloe, but are $100, and these $130 Sam Edelman Mary Jane flats are very much giving The Row.

But if anything that just goes to show how chic Mary Janes are, it's that, no matter how much you spend on them, they'll always just look like they belong on none other than Alexa Chung.
