Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is scheduled to undergo hip replacement surgery Friday, a procedure likely to put a temporary halt to his frequent international trips but otherwise not disrupt his activities. The 77-year-old leader should spend a few days in the Hospital Sirio-Libanes in the capital, Brasilia, before heading back to the presidential palace early next week, said Andrea Cordeiro of the president’s press office. “The impact of Lula’s surgery will probably be small and should not affect the decision-making process or negotiations in a significant way,” said Paulo Calmon, a political science professor at the University of Brasilia.
Voters in Eswatini will cast their ballots on Friday in parliamentary elections whose outcome will make little difference to the politics of a country controlled by Africa's last absolute monarch. King Mswati III has ruled the southern African kingdom of about 1.2 million people since 1986, when he inherited the crown from his father, Sobhuza II. Political parties are banned, but individual candidates can run for seats in the House of Assembly every five years.
Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, who was a leading GOP candidate for governor last year before fraudulent signatures on his paperwork derailed his campaign, is planning to enter the race for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat, according to two people familiar with the matter. Craig will join a growing field of GOP candidates trying to flip a seat that’s remained in Democratic control for over two decades. Former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers announced a bid less than a month ago and several others, including former U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer, are still considering campaigns.
China's international trade council has formally asked the United States to "carefully consider" rules that ban or restrict U.S. investments in China's tech sector, state television reported on Friday. U.S. President Joe Biden signed the executive order last month which prohibits or restricts investments in Chinese entities involved in semiconductors and microelectronics, quantum information technologies and certain artificial intelligence systems. State television said the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, which is supervised by the Ministry of Commerce, said the order sets "vague and broad restrictions" on investors and transaction types, and does not differentiate between military and civilian purposes.
The Green Bay Packers once again put themselves in an early hole. Jordan Love was sacked four times and the Packers gained just 21 yards in the first half of a 34-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. The brutal start came four nights after they beat the New Orleans Saints 18-17 only by scoring 18 unanswered points in the game’s final 11 minutes.
When 2019 finalists England and New Zealand meet again to open the Cricket World Cup next week, it will mark the tournament's return to India after 12 years. The event experienced numerous organizational and planning issues which the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the host body, often had difficulties dealing with them. The 13th edition of the tournament was first scheduled for February-March 2023, but it was delayed to its current Oct. 5-Nov. 19 schedule after the COVID-19 pandemic caused a ripple effect for the hosting of 2021 and 2022 Twenty20 World Cups.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — “I’ve been up all night, thinking about dying,” Ed Sheeran opens “When Will I Be Alright”, one of his new album’s final tracks. Sheeran has never been one to shy away from explicit emotionality, but something’s different on “Autumn Variations,” his sixth studio album and the first since his series of releases named after mathematical symbols. Inspiration came from an unusual place: composer Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations,” in which every composition was about a different friend.
