Is Sony’s Danger Mouse Movie Really A Good Idea?

We know what you’re thinking.

Firstly, are there actually legions of fans demanding the animated cartoon from the ‘80s is resurrected? And secondly, another origin story, seriously?

Tracking Board claim Sony Pictures Animation and Studio Canal will team up to bring the tiny hero to the big screen, after the cult television programme was recently rebooted for CBBC.

Apparently it’s going to be an origin story, according to a source. Haven’t we had more than enough of those already?

It’s said that it’ll ‘offer clues to the origins’ of the character of Danger Mouse, which, whilst some viewers may think that is a cool idea, there will no doubt be many rolling their eyes at the prospect.

The original cartoon, created by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall, ran from 1981 to 1992 in the UK.

As readers in their 30s will know, it was a quintessential British cartoon starring David Jason and Terry Scott as crime-fighting duo Danger Mouse and Penfold. It ran for 10 seasons, bearing a likeable wit and playfulness, especially with its tongue-in-cheek James Bond approach.

But it begs the question: Who’s demanding that a movie happens?

As a massive fan of the cartoon as a child, it’s never once cross my mind that I’d like to see more of it or, heaven forbid, a reimagining of some kind.

Let’s face it, it’s not got the same longevity or global appeal as, say, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ or ‘Transformers’, so the decision to go ahead with a film is mildly baffling.

Sony clearly believe there’s a market out there for it, even though its likely audience will not have heard of ‘Danger Mouse’ until last month’s revamp of the show.
