Is Newt Set To Return As An Adult In Neill Blomkamp's Alien Movie?

This is possibly a bit of a heavy hint, but as it’s Alien Day – yes, it’s Alien Day today, a reference to LV-426, the planet in ‘Alien’ and 'Aliens’, and thus April 26 in US format – it appears that director Neill Blomkamp is planning to bring back an iconic character to the franchise.

The 'Elysium’ and 'District 9’ director dropped a artistic rendering on his Instagram page of Newt, grown up and in space flight fatigues.

It’s been the talk of the potential future of the movies since original star Michael Biehn, who played Hicks in 'Alien’ and 'Aliens’, let slip the plans in an interview last year.

He said that a new movie in the series was 'planning on bringing me and Newt back and at this point Newt will be around twenty-seven years old… it’s really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt. It would keep the franchise alive’.

Blomkamp posted some of his unofficial concept art for the project back in January, 2015, though it’s now been deleted.

Whatever, the South African director’s vision for an 'Alien 5’ plot is a long way off, and he’d also have to come up with a way of bringing back Newt (originally played by child actress Carrie Henn) and Hicks anyway, as they were both killed off in 'Alien 3’.

Before there’s any talk of a new 'Alien’ movie, there has to be 'Alien: Covenant’, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s divisive 'Prometheus’, an origin story of sorts in the 'Alien’ storyworld.

Said Ripley herself, Sigourney Weaver, on whether the movie is happening, she said “Well, I *think* it is. Ridley asked Neill NOT to make our Alien til after Prometheus 2.

“He (Ridley) wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an AMAZING script, and Neill and I are REALLY excited about doing it.

“We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we DIDN’T do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait.”

Of that, we’ve no doubt.
