Inside Saksey’s, a Plush New Speakeasy Opening in Detroit This Spring

Motor City? More like Mixology City.

Detroit will soon be home to an elegant speakeasy, opening this spring. Saksey’s—from Josh Lang’s 7OH2 Hospitality and the Gilbert family—will offer tableside drinks, shareable plates, and live performances in an intimate, elegant setting. The vibes are simultaneously modern and old school, with the name coming from a Detroit bar that Dan Gilbert’s father owned in the ’70s. (Gilbert is owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, and his private-equity firm Rockbridge is a part owner of this publication.)

“Saksey’s is designed to provide an experience that connects people,” Lang said in a statement. “I want guests to come in, try a little of everything on the menu, sit back, and spend time with the people they love. Intimacy is a product of those you share it with. This room is built for intimate moments.”

After entering through an alleyway, you’re met with lacquered wood details and patterned walls designed by Pophouse. The cozy dining room and bar have just eight tables and 55 seats, placing connection and conviviality at the center of the concept.

Drinks come courtesy of Eric Hobbie, an award-winning mixologist who has dreamt up adventurous and elaborate cocktails for Saksey’s. There’s the High Class Gal, a mix of gin, cantaloupe juice, orgeat, lemon, and Champagne with watermelon ice diamonds that release more flavor as you sip from your flute. Or the Smoke & Mirrors, which sees tequila, lemon, St-Germain, and egg-white powder served neat in a black coupe glass, with a charcoal lipstick kiss for good measure.

While the libations are the star of the show here, they’re accompanied by Detroit-inspired small bites from chef Adrian Estrada. And performers will provide an interactive backdrop for your evening out, although the whole experience could be said to be one and the same with the entertainment.

“Saksey’s doesn’t just host a show, the guest experience is the show,” Lang said. “Whether it’s crafting cocktails tableside or delivering our mouthwatering sharable plates, there is an incredible amount of thought in every detail of this beautiful space.”

Saksey’s will be situated in the lower level of Gilly’s Clubhouse & Rooftop, a sports bar created by the Gilberts’ late son, Nick. It’s bound to bring a touch of old-fashioned glamour to Detroit when it opens later this year.
