How Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Two Dogs Are Adjusting to Life in Canada

One of the earliest signs that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were serious about a <a href="https://people.com/royals/will-meghan-markle-and-prince-harry-keep-frogmore-cottage-once-they-move-to-north-america/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:move to North America;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">move to North America</a>, was the fact that they brought both of their dogs (Meghan's beagle Guy and the couple's new Labrador) with them during their holiday in Canada at the end of 2019. And their four-legged friends have already adjusted to the abundant nature surrounding their new home. The couple were even spotted out on a hike with the couple. Asymina Kantorowicz encountered the couple during a <a href="https://people.com/royals/meghan-markle-and-prince-harry-help-couple-struggling-to-take-selfie-on-hike-in-canada/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:New Year's Day hike;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">New Year's Day hike</a>. She told PEOPLE that the pups were already across the pond: "They had two dogs with them, and we wanted to pet one."

In August 2018, PEOPLE confirmed that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry expanded their family — <a href="https://people.com/royals/meghan-markle-prince-harry-new-dog/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:with a new four-legged friend;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">with a new four-legged friend</a>! The couple got a dog — believed to be a Labrador — in early summer, and the pooch was first spotted joining them in the Cotswolds area of the U.K. He was brought home to the couple's former Kensington Palace home of Nottingham Cottage.

Although Harry confirmed they did get a new dog together, they are still keeping the pooch’s name hush-hush. But the latest addition was hardly the Duchess's first dog: Meghan has a long history with animals (and animal rescue), dating back to the adoption of her first pup, Bogart, whom she brought home at the behest of Ellen DeGeneres. I’m sitting there holding him and she’s like ‘Have you thought of a name for him yet?’ And I said, ‘Well, I think I’d name him Bogart,’ and she’s like ‘You’re taking the dog home.’ ” Markle continued, “And she walks outside to get into her car but instead of getting in she turns around and comes and taps on the window glass and she yells ‘Take the dog!’ And so I brought him home. Because Ellen told me to.”

Sterling, Kentucky. From his home state in America, Guy was transported by volunteers to A Dog’s Dream Rescue, after the American facility contacted the rescue group to see if it had room to take in and adopt out Guy. How lucky he was: Meghan found him via Petfinder, filled out an adoption application within minutes of contacting the rescue, and took the pup home after she fell in love face-to-face at a shelter event. Guy wasembedded into Meghan’s new royal life, moving to London with her and even staying <a href="https://people.com/royals/women-of-windsor-inside-their-lives-loves-secrets/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:at her feet as she sat for her hair and makeup on her wedding morning;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">at her feet as she sat for her hair and makeup on her wedding morning</a>.

Guy <a href="https://people.com/royals/meghan-markle-dog-breaks-two-legs/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:faced a slight setback;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">faced a slight setback</a> in late 2017 when he reportedly broke two legs, though later recovered. When the foursome walked to the garden, Brod and Sioda ran over to Meghan and Harry to be petted, barking at journalists along the way. The dogs stayed with them almost the whole visit — they were begging for attention from their visitors even as they said their farewells.
