Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny brings the curtain down on Harrison Ford's iconic character, and writer/director James Mangold has some experience when it comes to ending stories.

While Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is now set to return in Deadpool 3, Logan was originally seen as the final outing for the X-Men hero. Barring timeline shenanigans, it still will be chronologically since Wolverine dies at the end. (Sorry, spoiler alert.)

Talking at the press conference for the final Indiana Jones movie, which Digital Spy attended, Mangold outlined the key difference between the approach to both characters' final story.

"In Logan, I knew we were making the last one, but it was a character who had spent almost all of his life tortured, a kind of Frankenstein living in a world where his choices were to be a weapon or to somehow try and hide himself from everybody," he noted.

"And so, death seemed, in a way, to be a kind of salvation for him. And in the way we tried to write it and stage [it], it was that the last 30 seconds of his life were probably the best 30 seconds of his life."

Mangold added that this particular approach wouldn't work for Indiana Jones 5, so he had to find a different approach for the movie.

"What is it to be someone who's led such a dynamic life, who's seen so much, conquered and won and survived adversity and odds, but then life descends in kind of normalcy and the world moves on," he continued.

"Those adventures aren't presenting themselves anymore or you're not even necessarily ready for them. Those questions can sound grim but they also are the first chapter in a story about a guy who goes on one last ride.

"So, that to me all seemed really interesting and the opposite strategy, in a way."

As for what adventure those questions led to, all will be revealed when the movie is released in cinemas later this month.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is released in UK cinemas on June 28 and in US cinemas on June 30.
