Everyone has a different idea of what the recommended house temperature should be, but according to the experts, there is one perfect heating setting to suit all: 23.5°C.

New research by PlumbNation uncovered the temperatures that men, women, babies, plants and pets all thrive in, to reveal the optimal room temperature of a home. While 23.5°C is the average for UK homes, the team found that women are more comfortable at a room temperature of 25°C while for men, it's 22.2°C.

Meanwhile, families with babies should look at heating the room to around 18°C because they are much more sensitive to subtle changes in the temperature. If you have pets, our furry friends also like it warm and cosy, with the team recommending you heat the room between 20°C and 22°C.

When it comes to the best temperature for house plants, research found that plant parents should keep their rooms heated anywhere between 21°C and 27°C during the daytime. While this will of course depend on the type of species you are looking after, many plants will grow comfortably in warmer rooms.

If you're looking to save some money, PlumbNation advise you keep your home well insulated. "One way to insulate your house cheaply is to stop any draughts. Preventing heat from escaping through unwanted gaps is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to insulate your home," the team say.

"Keeping your curtains closed, or investing in a thermal curtain lining can likewise help to prevent warm air from escaping - this trick alone can reduce heat loss by up to 25%. It is also important to note that leaving your heating on low all day does not reduce your heating bills! Having the heating on only as and when you need it, is the best way to save energy."
