Human remains discovered at construction site for future Costco, California police say

Human remains were discovered at a construction site for a future Costco store, California police said.

Native American archaeological monitors were on site to look over the area for artifacts Dec. 3 when they discovered the human remains, the Redding Police Department said

“Redding Police and the Shasta County Coroner’s Office responded and confirmed the remains were human,” police said in a Dec. 6 statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, police personnel cordoned off the area and are restricting public access similar to a crime scene.”

Some remains were near the surface and already were collected by the county coroner. Police said officials don’t know how old the remains are, but they do not seem to be historical.

The anthropology department at California State University,Chico, will recover the rest of the human remains, police said.

The area will remain closed to the public, according to KRCR.

“We don’t know the story and are taking extra precautions to keep the public out,” Redding police Sgt. Jon Sheldon told the Redding Record Searchlight.
