Huckleberry’s opens its newest Fresno restaurant. Here are the most popular dishes to order

The latest Huckleberry’s Breakfast and Lunch opened quietly Monday, bringing its unique Southern bayou-themed food and style to northwest Fresno.

The restaurant is at 4360 W. Shaw Ave. — just east of the Costco shopping center near Blythe Avenue.

It’s the fourth Huckleberry’s diner for the area, and the 30th Huckleberry’s in total. (Aside from one Nevada location, all are in California, though restaurants will open soon in Fort Worth, Texas, and Nashville, Tennessee).

Area locations include one on Bullard Avenue next to Highway 41 and one at Champlain Drive and Perrin Avenue, both in Fresno. Another is in Clovis near Costco. Ray Tavakoli owns all but the Champlain location.

Huckleberry’s restaurants do very well in this market, the company noted.

The casual restaurants are open for breakfast and lunch. They’re a little different than your standard American or California brunch spots, said Reem Fahoum, vice president of marketing for Heritage Restaurant Brands.

“Our Southern cooking style, paired with the Southern hospitality sets us apart a little bit,” she said. “The look and feel, when you walk in it’s as if you’ve truly walked into a restaurant in the bayou.”

Heavy on the Southern theme, the restaurant has a weeping willow tree inside, drinks served in Mason jars and booths with little shacks built over them.

So what is the most popular thing to eat here?

For entrees, it’s the Mississippi skillet, along with the stacked chicken and waffles, Fahoum said.

The Mississippi is essentially a scramble served on a hot iron skillet with ham, bacon, sausage, Monterey Jack cheese and more.

The stacked chicken and waffles is two fried chicken breasts between waffles with sriracha aioli, maple syrup, ranch, bacon and green onions, all topped with maple-pecan butter.

The most popular appetizers are the Mardi Gras beignets, the fritters often associated with New Orleans, and fried green tomatoes.

Huckleberry’s is open from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The restaurant also offers catering and fundraisers. A grand opening celebration is in the works in the coming weeks.
