How Does Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Set Up The Justice League?

image

Since the hype of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ died down, the title on everyone’s lips has undoubtedly been ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’.

In order for DC to finally catch up to the already dominant Marvel, it was always going to be vital that Zack Snyder’s flick did its best to set-up upcoming universe expansion ‘The Justice League Part One’.

Warning: spoilers to follow.

Here’s everything ‘Justice League’-related we learned in the film and what it means for the future of the DC movies.

Wonder Woman, obviously

While Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince features sporadically throughout the movie, it’s only in climax where she’s properly introduced as Wonder Woman in all her superhero splendour. In case you didn’t know, she’s one of he seven faces that make up the Justice League of America.

Apocalypse When?

During one of Batman’s ‘Knightmares’, he faces Darkseid, one of the most dastardly villains in the entire DC universe. Could he be the baddie in the two-parter movie? It’s either a vision of the future or an alternative universe and spells out what may happen unless Bats goes on to start his search for what will become the Justice League. But more on that later.

Lex Luthor’s secret files

We get the first glimpses of Justice League members when Bruce accesses Lex’s encrypted files, which not only alerts him to Wonder Woman (who is pictured in a World War I photo, looking fresh as a daisy), but the other main players, too.

Aquaman at work

His file shows a video of Jason Momoa’s ocean dweller blasting an underwater drone with his mighty trident. Weirdly, the solo ‘Aquaman’ movie isn’t out until after ‘The Justice League Part One’, but his abilities that include sea-life telepathy and super speed should be interesting, as is the new-look Arthur Curry who has switched from his blond-haired roots to jet black.

Cyborg & the S.T.A.R. Labs

This one’s kind of obvious when you see it on-screen, even if you’re unfamiliar with the DC world. It’s a video of a S.T.A.R. Labs scientist creating a half-robot, half-man - a cyborg. We see Victor Stone in considerable pain as his father Silas tries to save him by welding together what’s left of him with advanced mechanical parts. This grants him super powers, such as speed, strength, endurance, as well as built-in body armour, which is handy.

The Flash and his time travelling message

We see Ezra Miller’s The Flash not once but twice. The first time is when he comes to Bruce Wayne in one of his dream sequences. Flash quite literally bursts through time to deliver a cryptic message to him: “You have to find us. It’s Lois. She’s the key. Find the stone.” Could he be any more vague in his foreshadowing message?

What this implies is Superman’s missus has something significant to offer in the DC universe, but we’re not exactly sure what. One possible theory is that the ‘key’ could refer to the engagement ring Martha gave Lois after Clark’s funeral. Is she the component to resurrecting him, perhaps? Is there something of significance within the ring itself?

The second time we see him is with Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Aquaman in Lex’s secret files. Here, we can clearly see Barry Allen intervene during a supermarket robbery, using his super speed to save the day as he causes electrical interference in an attempt to disguise his handy work.

Bruce’s big decision

Just after Clark’s laid to rest and as the movie comes to a close, Bruce tells Diana that he intends to track down the faces he saw in Lex’s files, thus the beginning of the Justice League. We can assume that the next film will be about Wayne hunting down and bringing together our heroic team. Hurrah!

No Green Lantern

There was, however, no glimpse of Green Lantern, probably because he hasn’t been cast yet, so it looks like the first time we’ll see him will be in the actual ‘Justice League movie itself.

‘The Justice League Part One’ is due out in November, 2017.
