Hornets see a new side of LaMelo Ball + CMS considering canceling class next Monday

Welcome to the week, everyone. This is Kristen. Today, I’d like to introduce you to our newest colleague here at the Observer. Meet Ellis Williams, Panthers analyst and reporter. You can say hi to him here, and make sure to keep an eye out for his byline.

Let’s get into today’s headlines:

1. LaMelo Ball ‘damn near told coach’ to keep him on the bench

Ish Smith — not LaMelo Ball — was on the floor for most of the fourth quarter during the Hornets’ 111-95 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday. Why?

“Melo damn near told Coach,” Miles Bridges said, “he told Coach, he was like, ‘Leave him in the game.’”

Smith was playing a fantastic game, and Ball recognized that.

“Melo, I’ve got to give Melo a ton of credit,” Hornets coach James Borrego said. “He wanted us … He said, ‘Just ride out Ish. Ish is hot, Ish is rolling. I trust it. Let’s go.’ And that’s just maturity on his part.”

As our Hornets reporter Rod Boone wonders, how many 20-year-olds with that kind of power and skill would say such a thing? Analyze the situation here with Boone.

2. CMS considering canceling class Monday after Halloween

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district leaders recommend an extra day off for students on Monday, Nov. 1.

The school board will consider the change at its meeting Tuesday. If approved, students will have a four-day break, including Halloween weekend and a teacher work day already scheduled for Tuesday, Nov 2..

“I will be supporting this, although I understand the disruption to families,” board member Rhonda Cheek wrote on her Facebook page. “Our staff needs this. In addition there is some mandated training (by the state) that our teachers cannot complete during their normal school day.”
