HOME TOUR: 3BHK Mumbai apartment that's wild on pattern

Ariyona Interiors is known for its vibrant designs that are often marked by bold patterns and vivid colour pops. But the brief for this residence in suburban Mumbai had the firm a bit stumped. “The client loves blue, yet was also looking for a burst of colour in her home. After some back and forth, I think we managed to balance both just right,” says principal designer & founder Rittika Chokhany.

The result is a three-bedroom apartment whose varied spaces are colour coded according to its specific purpose and inhabitant’s personality. The client’s love of blue is satiated at the entrance with a classic blue door, which also inspires the living area’s palette.

Adding depth to each setting is a melange of patterns that draw the eye without being overly distracting.

“I keep two basic rules in mind while mixing patterns: Always balance your patterns with solids and colours with neutrals. Balance bolder and brighter patterns with lighter, more delicate ones,” says Rittika.

No points for guessing the why this 3BHK is fondly referred to as The Blue Door Project. The client’s love of blue is seen at the entrance. The deep blue rug with pops of reds and pinks inspired the palette of the living room, explains Rittika.

The dining area is the first space you see on entering the home. Its black-and-white palette are in contrast to the burst of colour that runs amok in the rest of the home. The fine, black-and-white linework wallpaper didn’t restrict our use of colour across the rest of the dining cum living space.

“[The] stunning bone-inlay sideboard helped us finalise so many design elements in the dining space,” says Rittika. Its angular design inspires that of the fluted glass window. In contrast is a circular mirror.

The balcony features warmer reds and oranges that echo its sunset views.

In the master bedroom, green takes centre stage, creating a calming oasis. The space packs in a bookshelf cum slide-away study, and a dressing area built into an existing niche. To capitalise on space, Rittika ditched conventional side-tables and turned the headboard into a slim shelf instead.

The snug guest bedroom is planned to maximise space. The queen-size bed is flanked by slimline wardrobes with built-in niches and slide-out glass shelves (read, side-tables). Its lavender palette was dictated by the cypress-patterned wallpaper.

The little girl’s room is peppy in pink and orange. The toy storage was custom-designed; the single bed can be extended to accommodate sleepover guests. And finally, the main wardrobe fits snug into a niche behind the door.
