Hollyoaks' James and John Paul team up to free Sally

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Friday's (June 18) Hollyoaks saw Theresa McQueen desperately beg James Nightingale for help to try and get Sally McQueen and John Paul McQueen out of prison after it was revealed during Thursday's (June 17) episode that Sally would be joining him behind bars.

"We need you," Theresa begged at the start of the episode as she desperately tried to think of a way to free Sally, to which James hit back, "John Paul gave them a confession, Sally gave them DNA, It's not going to be easy."

James then headed to prison to talk to John Paul (who he's gotten pretty close to in the past) and urged him to retract his confession.

"I need to protect Sally," John Paul hit back. "It's my fault that Sally's in this mess. It's my fault George is dead."

When James pointed out he wasn't actually the one who killed him, John Paul responded, "No, but I am the one who started it, so I need to be the one to end it."

He added, "The only power I have left is to help Sally" as he believed "two conflicting confessions might muddy the waters" in the eyes of the police.

James later called in a favour from the police by saying George had been abusing John Paul as he asked for Sally to be allowed a phone call to speak to her son. His favour was granted, and Sally tried desperately to get John Paul to retract his statement.

"I can deal with prison, whatever they're going to throw at me. But not if my son is in prison as well," Sally said, pointing out that his son Matthew Jesus McQueen needed someone home.

"That boy needs a father and not just one he sees across a table once a month," she continued, admitting "what [she] did was wrong" and she needed to pay the price.

"So please, will you just tell the truth?" she pleaded, to which John Paul finally admitted, "I'll do it, I'll retract my statement."

James later returned to prison to let John Paul know retracting his statement "worked", but informed him that he'd be staying behind bars on a charge of perverting the course of justice until the trial because of his false confession.

John Paul still seemed more concerned for Sally though, pointing out how difficult things will be for her as a trans person.

"We're going to fight for her aren't we?" he asked James. "We're going to bring Sally home."

It seems like the former lovers are united, this time for an important cause. Could sparks soon fly between the exes once again?
