Hollyoaks airs Mercedes McQueen's life-changing decision

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Mercedes McQueen has made a life-changing decision following the kidnapping controversy in Hollyoaks.

Wednesday's (June 23) first-look episode featured Mercy being caught up in Cher swiping Tony and Diane's newborn Eva, when the teen tried to set up her stepmother.

Cher realised Mercedes had passed out after relapsing on alcohol, so she placed Eva nearby to make it look like Mercy had kidnapped her.

It was Peri Lomax who made the discovery when she turned up to change Cher's bandages, only to awaken Mercedes and find her with Eva.

Mercedes swore she didn't have any idea how the child ended up in her home, but in talking through her emotions about wanting to have a baby with Sylver, she even started to believe she'd kidnapped Eva.

"Peri, this has got to be the worst thing I've ever done," Mercedes insisted, but Peri encouraged her: "Yeah, it's bad. It's bad, but she's safe. I'm sure it'll be fine. We can take her back, explain."

When Mercedes set off to return baby Eva, Peri rumbled what was really going on as Cher couldn't contain her glee over her stepmother's agony.

"She didn't steal the baby, didn't she?" Peri demanded to know, with Cher gloating: "As long as she thinks she did, that's all I care about."

Meanwhile, Tony was filled with rage when Mercedes explained what she'd done, telling her she had no idea how much "hate" for her he was feeling.

"You don't think about the chaos or harm that you cause, Mercedes. You just trample over everyone," Tony seethed. "You need help. You need proper help."

While it appeared that Mercedes wouldn't face criminal charges, she revealed to Sylver that she'd have to go away for a while to address her relapse.

"I need proper help, Sylver, and if I don't check myself in now, I will never get better," she explained. "[I'm going] away from everybody. I've already called them."

As Sylver begged Mercedes to let him help her, she tearfully begged him: "Let me do this."

With Mercedes heading off for treatment, Cher couldn't help but a grin behind Sylver's back after insisting she'd help him get through his wife's departure.

Sylver wasn't the only one in agony, as Diane also ordered Tony to kick out her nephew Scott Drinkwell because he'd been watching baby Eva before the kidnapping.
