Holby City fans got an almighty surprise tonight (July 27) – Jac Naylor is back!

Rosie Marcel has reprised her role as the popular medic, just five months after her exit back in January.

Tonight's scenes saw Jac unveiled as the mysterious Director of Improvement, who was also responsible for the introductions of Eli (Davood Ghadami) and Madge (Clare Burt).

Spoilers for this evening's episode had revealed that the identity of the DOI would be a familiar face but Jac's return was kept under wraps until transmission.

Digital Spy can confirm that this is a permanent return and Jac will be on screen for the foreseeable as she continues her mission to turn the hospital around.

Speaking about how he felt coming into the show alongside Jac, former EastEnders star Davood – who plays newcomer Eli – said: "I've been telling myself that hasn't happened yet so I don't spill the beans. I know how popular of a character she is. For them to couple me with her has been great."

Teasing the drama to come between Eli and Jac over the coming weeks, Davood added: "Eli knows the value of his work and in terms of Jac, she's always had control of those lower in the pecking order, but there's a sense of needing Eli there right now.

"I think when they come to blows, they're really interesting scenes, no one will back down, and I know there's so many people who are huge fans of Rosie/Jac, just to come back and see her shaken up will be interesting.

"Ultimately, she won't change, which is what I love about her character. Eli challenges Jac, they definitely rub each other up the wrong way, but also they have joint aims! There's moments where they understand each other and having them come together and do what's best for Holby is a good thing. It's not all head to head!"

Holby City airs Tuesday evenings on BBC One.
