Hit-and-run badly hurts 62-year-old crossing guard near elementary school, NC cops say

A crossing guard was seriously hurt in a hit-and-run in front of an elementary school, North Carolina officials told news outlets.

The 62-year-old was flown to a hospital and put into a critical care unit after a car struck him on Thursday, March 30, the Lumberton Police Department told The Robesonian newspaper.

Now, the driver accused of leaving the scene of the crash is facing multiple charges, including “felony hit and run, operating a vehicle with no operator’s license, speeding in a school zone, reckless driving and failure to reduce speed to avoid accident,” according to WPDE.

Police told news outlets the crash happened on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Lumberton, roughly 95 miles south of Raleigh. It was reported at about 7:45 a.m. outside W.H. Knuckles Elementary School.

Officials believe no children were on the road at the time of the crash. Though the incident left the crossing guard seriously hurt, he’s expected to recover from his injuries, WMBF reported.

The 28-year-old suspected driver is accused of not stopping after the collision before later returning to the scene. The woman, from the nearby town of Red Springs, confessed to crashing into the man, police told WBTW.

Officers ask anyone with information about the hit-and-run to call them at 910-671-3845, news outlets reported.

The Lumberton Police Department didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on March 31.
