A small bit of relief for the drought, wildfires and poor air quality in B.C. may be on the way this week, in part due, of all things, to the remnants of Hilary.
Hilary’s remnant moisture will flow into Western Canada through Thursday, bringing widespread clouds and bouts of rain to southeastern B.C. This rain will temporarily suppress wildfire activity across the province, also improving the air quality.

The wildfire smoke comes as a historic wildfire season shows no signs of slowing across the province. Raging fires throughout the Interior have forced thousands from their homes as crews rushed to battle the spreading flames.

Timing: Wednesday
Weather: Fire weather is showing subtle signs of a reprieve in the short range, but not long term. Cooler temperatures, cloud cover, and rainfall for some is forecast through Wednesday, meaning less aggressive wildfire activity the next couple of days. Air quality will improve for some, blowing towards the east thanks to onshore flow.

This rain will temporarily suppress wildfire activity across the province, but a lot of the significant rainfall will miss the complex of fires near and west of the Okanagan.
Helpful weather disappears in the long-range pattern
Long-range: The slightly beneficial weather won't be sticking around.
Long-range models indicate an abrupt warm-up will begin into next weekend, with temperatures once again soaring into the low- to mid-30s in areas away from the water. That, coupled with drier conditions, will once again increase wildfire activity across the province.
