Hiker plunges 100 feet from Hawaii trail. Onlookers rushed to help her, officials say

A hiker plunged 100 feet from a Hawaii trail — but onlookers were able to help her, officials said.

The 35-year-old woman was near the third peak of her hike Monday, Jan. 17, when she tumbled off the ridge, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

She was hiking the Olomana Trail, a 4.4-mile hike near Kailua that’s recommended “for very experienced adventurers,” according to hiking website All Trails.

The hiker had multiple injuries from her fall, according to the fire department. Two onlookers were able to help the woman.

They climbed down the steep ridge to be at the woman’s side, firefighters said. The bystanders called 911 for help and gave the woman an initial assessment.

Rescuers in a fire department helicopter later made contact with the hiker and the two others.

They flew to a landing zone, got equipment and lifted the hiker to safety. The two onlookers were also airlifted off the trail.

“They freed and lowered her from the treetop where she had landed, then they packaged her and safely airlifted her to the landing zone where care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services,” firefighters said in a news release.
