We're near the end of the year and the likes of Wicked and Moana 2 are making late surges up the highest-grossing movies of 2024 list.

Wicked has cracked the top ten and Moana 2 has already sailed into the top five of the year to date.

So what else has been pulling in the punters at the box office this year? You might have heard of a little movie called Deadpool & Wolverine, but that's not the highest-grossing movie of the year to date.

What managed to beat it at the global box office? Well, read on to find out.

10. Venom: The Last Dance

Worldwide: $475,415,071

Venom: The Last Dance might not have come close to the heights of Venom ($856.1 million), but the final Venom movie can still be happy with nearly $500 million worldwide given the critical bashing that the trilogy has taken.

9. YOLO

Worldwide: $479,597,304

The movie leading the way this year at China's box office is boxing comedy-drama YOLO with nearly $500 million worldwide. It's a remake of Japanese movie 100 Yen Love, and dominated the Chinese New Year weekend earlier this year.

8. Kung Fu Panda 4

US: $193,590,620
International: $354,098,872
Worldwide: $547,689,492

Kung Fu Panda 4 might not have reached the heights of Kung Fu Panda 2 ($664.8 million), but it did take the entire franchise past the $2 billion mark globally. Considering there had been an eight-year gap since the third movie, it was a decent result even if one that was overshadowed by two other animations in 2024 (more on them soon).

7. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Worldwide: $568,721,707

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was a monster hit back in late March, even if it did have to battle with Dune: Part Two. The sequel became the highest-grossing outing in the MonsterVerse to date, as well as the biggest Godzilla or King Kong movie ever.

6. Wicked

Worldwide: $571,309,875

Wicked is well on course to become the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all time, with some Sing-Along screenings to come over Christmas that'll boast its already-impressive box-office result.

5. Dune: Part Two

Worldwide: $708,630,340

For the first half of 2024, Dune: Part Two was the biggest movie of the year with more than $700 million worldwide. The sequel earned nearly $300 million more than the first movie, so it's no surprise Denis Villeneuve will be returning to Arrakis for Dune 3.

4. Moana 2

US: $359,068,328
International: $431,100,000
Worldwide: $790,168,328

Moana 2 has already comfortably sailed past Moana's $643.3 million result, and could still profit over Christmas as it aims to become the third movie of 2024 to hit the $1 billion mark. It's not guaranteed though as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is providing stiff family competition.

3. Despicable Me 4

US: $361,004,205
International: $608,122,247
Worldwide: $969,126,452

You just can't stop the Minions. Only in a franchise like this can Despicable Me 4's $968 million haul seem a bit of a disappointment as it fell just short of crossing $1 billion as Minions and Despicable Me 3 did.

However, the fourth movie proved that there's no stronger or more consistent (box office-wise) animated franchises around.

2. Deadpool & Wolverine

Worldwide: $1,338,073,382

Marvel would have had high hopes for the MCU debuts of Deadpool and Wolverine, but even the most optimistic wouldn't have expect just how big Deadpool & Wolverine got.

It's the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time and the sixth-biggest MCU movie ever.

1. Inside Out 2

US: $652,980,194
International: $1,045,606,553
Worldwide: $1,698,586,747

Talking of mega successes that few expected brings us to Inside Out 2, currently the highest-grossing movie of 2024 to date.

It'll take some effort to remove it from that title too as it's the biggest animation of all time with nearly $1.7 billion which also makes it, by some distance, the highest-grossing Pixar movie ever.
