The highest-grossing movies of 2024 to date
We're into the final two months of the year and Joker: Folie à Deux has become an unexpected casualty of the unpredictable box office tides in 2024.
The likes of Madame Web, Argylle and Borderlands have all struggled, but Joker 2's soft US box office opening might be the most surprising of all. The DC sequel might well rebound in the coming weeks, although it'll be tough with poor word of mouth.
So what has been pulling in the punters at the box office this year instead? You might have heard of a little movie called Deadpool & Wolverine, but that's not the highest-grossing movie of the year to date.
What managed to beat it at the global box office? Well, read on to find out.
(The totals below are accurate as of November 8, 2024, and from The Numbers and Box Office Mojo.)
The highest-grossing movies of 2024 so far
10. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
US: $292,636,638
International: $156,500,000
Worldwide: $449,136,638
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice might have taken 36 years to reach us, but the legacy sequel proved worth the wait with an impressive US box office total pushing it to nearly $450 million worldwide.
9. Pegasus 2
US: N/A
International: $466,930,272
Worldwide: $466,930,272
Sports comedy sequel Pegasus 2 was one of the big local releases for this year's Chinese New Year in February. It nearly doubled the worldwide take of its predecessor which took $255 million in 2019.
8. Successor
US: N/A
International: $469,612,890
Worldwide: $469,612,890
Family comedy-drama Successor was the big local hit at the China box office this summer, retaining top spot for five consecutive weeks. It's the second highest-grossing movie of the year at the local box office.
7. YOLO
US: $2,001,584
International: $477,595,720
Worldwide: $479,597,304
The movie leading the way this year at China's box office is boxing comedy-drama YOLO with nearly $500 million worldwide. It's a remake of Japanese movie 100 Yen Love, and dominated the Chinese New Year weekend earlier this year.
6. Kung Fu Panda 4
US: $193,590,620
International: $354,450,215
Worldwide: $548,040,835
Kung Fu Panda 4 might not have reached the heights of Kung Fu Panda 2 ($664.8 million), but it did take the entire franchise past the $2 billion mark globally. Considering there had been an eight-year gap since the third movie, it was a decent result even if one that was overshadowed by two other animations in 2024 (more on them soon).
5. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
US: $196,350,016
International: $372,371,691
Worldwide: $568,721,707
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was a monster hit back in late March, even if it did have to battle with Dune: Part Two. The sequel became the highest-grossing outing in the MonsterVerse to date, as well as the biggest Godzilla or King Kong movie ever.
4. Dune: Part Two
US: $282,144,358
International: $427,421,510
Worldwide: $709,565,868
For the first half of 2024, Dune: Part Two was the biggest movie of the year with more than $700 million worldwide. The sequel earned nearly $300 million more than the first movie, so it's no surprise Denis Villeneuve will be returning to Arrakis for Dune 3.
3. Despicable Me 4
US: $361,004,205
International: $606,525,271
Worldwide: $967,529,476
You just can't stop the Minions. Only in a franchise like this can Despicable Me 4's $968 million haul seem a bit of a disappointment as it fell just short of crossing $1 billion as Minions and Despicable Me 3 did.
However, the fourth movie proved that there's no stronger or more consistent (box office-wise) animated franchises around.
2. Deadpool & Wolverine
US: $636,742,741
International: $701,053,616
Worldwide: $1,337,796,357
Marvel would have had high hopes for the MCU debuts of Deadpool and Wolverine, but even the most optimistic wouldn't have expect just how big Deadpool & Wolverine got.
It's the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time and the sixth-biggest MCU movie ever.
1. Inside Out 2
US: $652,980,194
International: $1,044,112,686
Worldwide: $1,697,092,880
Talking of mega successes that few expected brings us to Inside Out 2, currently the highest-grossing movie of 2024 to date.
It'll take some effort to remove it from that title too as it's the biggest animation of all time with nearly $1.7 billion which also makes it, by some distance, the highest-grossing Pixar movie ever.
