At least 26 dead after tornadoes rip through South

Tornadoes left a trail of destruction across rural Mississippi and Alabama overnight Friday, killing at least 26 people, razing buildings and plunging thousands of homes into darkness. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said 2,000 homes in Mississippi were damaged or destroyed. Another tornado hit near Cannonville, Georgia, on the Alabama border Sunday, leaving behind "significant damage," the LaGrange Daily News reported. Severe weather was rumbling through parts of the South again on Sunday, even as search and rescue teams continued to dig through the rubble.

Trump holds first rally of 2024 election cycle

Former President Donald Trump replayed his greatest hits Saturday evening in Waco, Texas, during his first major campaign stop of the 2024 presidential race. In a speech that lasted some 95 minutes, Trump railed against the Biden administration, his likely top GOP opponent in 2024 and the legal woes he faces. The former president steered clear of addressing the deadly Waco siege nearly 30 years ago that experts in political violence feared may have informed his decision to hold the rally there. FAU among Final Four newcomers; UConn women's streak snapped

The Florida Atlantic Owls continued their improbable March Madness run, upsetting Tennessee and Kansas State en route to their first ever men's Final Four berth. FAU next faces San Diego State, another Final Four newcomer, in the national semifinals. On the other side of the backet, UConn will face Miami, another team going to its first Final Four.. In the women's tournament, UConn fell short of the Elite Eight for the first time in 18 years after losing to Ohio State.

Putin says Russia will station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans on Saturday to station tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus, a warning to the West as it steps up military support for Ukraine. Putin said he was responding to Britain’s decision this past week to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium. Russia falsely claimed these rounds have nuclear components.

Netanyahu fires minister who wanted to delay controversial reform plan

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday fired his defense minister, a day after the high-ranking official called for a pause on a controversial judicial reform proposal that has fueled months of intense protests. The defense minister, Yoav Gallant, said Saturday that the judicial overhaul posed a security threat to Israel. Military reservists have refused to sign up for duty and many more have threatened to do the same. Demonstrations are sweeping across Israel protesting the proposal that could have wide-ranging implications for minority groups in the country.

Mitch McConnell released from inpatient program after fall

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Saturday was released from an inpatient physical therapy program after falling at a hotel in Washington earlier this month. The Kentucky Republican, who was treated for a concussion and a fractured rib, said he will work from home the next few days. It's unclear when he might return to the Senate floor; McConnell is not expected to return this week, and Congress will take a two-week recess starting April 3.
