Herald food podcast: Writer Vanessa Garcia on the story of Cuba’s rum, exile and bread

Vanessa Garcia wrote the story of rum.

Her play, the Amparo Experience, told the true tale of the Cuban family behind the real Havana Club Rum — and it became the hottest theater ticket in Miami in 2019, selling out show after show for six months.

On the Sept. 29 episode of La Ventanita, the weekly Miami Herald food podcast, we’ll talk to Vanessa about why her writing career continues to revolve around food and drink — and the restless story of her home country of Cuba.

Her newest work is “What the Bread Says,” a children’s book about how an entire country’s story can be told through its bread, from revolutionary French baguette to the Cuban bread of exile. And she has a new play debuting at the Arsht Center called “#Graced.” It follows a woman on a journey across America, exploring the evolution of the American dream.
