Helping Families Handle Cancer Bereavement Boxes Support Grieving Families and Local Small Businesses

CALGARY, AB / ACCESSWIRE / December 9, 2022 / The loss of a child is an unthinkable pain that no parent should have to experience. At Helping Families Handle Cancer we are aiming to further support the families we cared for during their child's treatment, by collaborating with Avery's Legacy to support families who are experiencing loss. On Saturday, December 10, 2022, we will be assembling 75 beautiful and intentionally curated Bereavement Boxes to gift AT NO COST to parents navigating the journey through the loss of their child to cancer.

Each of the boxes contains items specially curated by local Calgary businesses that are female-identifying and/or Black Indigenous and Person of Color (BIPOC) owned.

The items included are intentional and meaningful to help a family honour the relationship with their child.

Our Bereavement boxes include items such as a candle with the child's name, bath bombs to relax, rubbing stones to help with anxiety, and hand-crafted tumblers. The boxes also include items like birdseed and forget-me-not flower seeds, as research shows that in grief, communing with nature and being able to intentionally acknowledge the person you have lost helps with the grief process.

We would like to invite you to see this project come to life as the 75 boxes get packed by 25 + volunteers and key stakeholders on Saturday, December 10th, 2022 from 10 AM - 12 PM at the ‘Upper Room' in the Seton YMCA Calgary Public Library (4995 Market Street SE, Calgary).

ABOUT HELPING FAMILIES HANDLE CANCER

Helping Families Handle Cancer is a not-for-profit organization that strives to alleviate some of the stress of childhood cancer by providing financial support to families in need, due to the time commitment at the hospital, in caring for their child. The Helping Families Care Program purchases items such as parking passes, medical supplies, medication not covered through benefits, rent, fuel, groceries, and other household bills that families are struggling to pay for as they take time away from work to be with their child during this critical time. To date, Helping Families has helped over 1,900 families at the Alberta Children's Hospital with over $1 million in financial support, giving more precious time with their little warrior! In 2022, Helping Families Handle Cancer expanded its Care Program to include a Palliative and Bereavement Care Program which financially supports families with a child who is not going to survive their cancer diagnosis.
