Moana may not consider herself to be a traditional Disney princess, but as her wayfinding companion Maui points out in the Mouse House’s newest animated blockbuster, she possesses two of the essential elements that define Disney royalty: a dress and an animal sidekick. To be fair, animal sidekicks aren’t the exclusive companions of Disney princesses; a variety of the studio’s heroes have benefitted from the companionship of various critters. We’ve ranked some of Disney’s best and brightest animal sidekicks — as well as a pair of Pixar-generated creatures, who joined the Disney canon in the wake of the studio’s 2006 acquisition — focusing exclusively on the ones that have accompanied human heroes. (In other words, don’t go looking for Simba’s buddies, Timon and Pumbaa.)
