The Heat's new Miami Vice jerseys are one of the best uniforms in sports, and also possibly cursed

Not everything has gone right for the Miami Heat over the last few years, but their City Edition jerseys are one win you shouldn’t be taking away from them.

Introduced last year, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t consider those gloriously retro, Miami Vice lettered uniforms as one of the best uniforms in basketball, if not all sports. They’ve certainly driven Miami fans into a frenzy, with last year’s white uniform reportedly selling better than every other City Edition jersey combined.

The Heat did the basketball world a favor this season and kept the Miami Vice aesthetic for this year’s City Edition uniform, only on a black jersey. They even threw in an entire court for themed Vice Nights that matched the jerseys, immediately making it one of the best courts in basketball. The whole thing was amazing, an example of the greatness our species is capable of.

But did it come with a cost?

While we all gave kudos to the Heat for their inspired design choices, the team toiled during those beloved Vice Nights. Entering Friday, the Heat were 0-6 on Vice Nights. That apparently led some players to blame the jerseys on their backs.

Did Heat players superstitiously ditch the Vice jerseys?

When the Heat took the floor for what had been scheduled to be a Vice Night game, the team was clad in their usual red jerseys instead of their black City Edition uniforms.

The Heat’s Vice court remained, as did their special retro graphics, which you can see in a Twitter video from the team below. The only thing missing was the jerseys.

In case your wondering where this decision to ditch the Vice jerseys came from, it didn’t come from the front office or the marketing departments. The team’s game notes even reportedly said the team would wear the Vice jerseys for the game.

Per the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Vice jerseys were also laid in the players’ locker as early as an hour prior to game time. Clearly, this change came in at the last minute. And it might have paid off.

Vice-less Heat tops Pelicans

Playing in their standard red jerseys, the Heat ran the Pelicans off the court in the first quarter by a score of 37-17. Miami would later lead New Orleans by as much as 31 points, and hold off a furious comeback to win 106-101.

Unfortunately, that win might only validate whoever decided to ditch the Vice jerseys. That sure would be a shame.
