On September 19, Adnan Syed made headlines when his conviction for the murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee was overturned. And today, prosecutors dropped the murder charges altogether. Syed was the subject of the hugely popular 2014 podcast Serial, which explored his conviction and the events leading up to and after his incarceration.

In 2016, Syed's case was appealed by his family and legal counsel. HBO documented the event in the series The Case Against Adnan Syed, which explores the events surrounding the original case, as well as the outcome of the 2016 appeal.
Following Syed's prison release in September, HBO Documentary Films announced that a new addition to the original documentary series is already underway, which will explore Syed's release and the events that led up to the court case being dismissed. The new episode will premiere in 2023.

Directed by Amy Berg, 2019's The Case Against Adnan Syed is a four-episode series that explores the conviction of Adnan Syed for the murder of Hae Min Lee and the appeal for his release. The series recaps the twists and turns laid out in the popular podcast Serial, offering interviews and updates on Syed's status as of 2018.
The new episode will focus on the events that led up to his release, with Berg set to direct. This month, a Baltimore judge ordered Adnan Syed's conviction to be vacated and Syed himself released, in light of new evidence as well as evidence that was withheld by the prosecution during the original court proceeding. Syed had spent 23 years in prison before his release last week.
In a press release for the series' update, Berg said, "We knew the end of The Case Against Adnan Syed was not the end of this story, and we’ve been closely following every twist and turn in the case since the series premiered in March 2019. It’s gratifying to see many of the questions and issues probed in the original episodes come to bear on the events of this week."
