While playing ice hockey with her husband, Prince William, in Stockholm, Middleton wore a fluffy grey hand-knit pom-pom beanie designed by Kim. Over Grammys weekend, Beyoncé wore a custom leather beret with her Azzi and Osta gown. Afterward, the designer decided to offer customers a chance to buy their own made-to-order “Carter” berets, named after the famous couple. On Instagram, Perry sported her own wool beret by Kim, pairing it with a chic pair of leather trousers and a rhinestone-studded turtleneck.
Kim has a great reputation in the fashion industry for her ability to create custom designs that meet almost any client’s needs, no matter how eclectic. She once made a 10-foot feathered mohawk for Dave Chappelle. In 2000, she was the go-to designer Joe Zee called when he was working on the Zoolander movie. In the movie, “Milla Jovovich is wearing one of the red haircut hats, and so is Owen Wilson. [For] Ben Stiller — I took 26 feather quills that were dyed bright yellow and made a caged face mask that he’s wearing down the runway,” Kim shared in an interview with the Coveteur.
Since then, Kim has made hats for feature films such as The Beguiled as well as High Fidelity. In 2004, she was awarded the prestigious Accessories Designer of the Year by the CFDA. In 2010, Kim debuted her limited edition collection with retail giant Target. The designer has since expanded her repertoire to include handbags, scarves, and key chains — but hats will always be at the heart of the brand.
This year, the designer is celebrating her 20th anniversary with a special presentation during NYFW on Feb. 8. She will be digging throughout her archives to recreate her most iconic hat shapes and styles for a special capsule collection.
In the meantime, you can buy a classic beret like Perry’s or Beyoncé’s, as well as other caps and beanies with a playful touch, such as a cat whisker pom-pom hat. If you’ve been searching for a chic chapeau to transform an otherwise dull winter outfit, look no further than Eugenia Kim.
