Harvey Weinstein is indicted in California

Harvey Weinstein has been indicted in California on sexual assault charges, one of his lawyers said on Monday, when he appeared by video from where he's currently held at a New York state correctional facility.

Lawyers debated whether to extradite him to California for court proceedings, but Weinstein’s attorney, Norman Effman, asked that he stay in New York so he could receive necessary medical treatment.

"Mr. Weinstein is confined in a maximum security facility not far from Buffalo, New York, and he's in what is called a regional medical unit. He's in that unit because of multiple medical issues, including cardiac, including back, including eye problems, including dental problems, including diabetes."

California’s criminal charges against Weinstein were announced last year and cover alleged sexual assaults on five women from 2004 to 2013 in the Los Angeles area.

They include four counts of forcible rape and forcible oral copulation, two counts of sexual battery by restraint, and one count of sexual penetration by use of force.

If convicted in California, Weinstein could spend the rest of his life in prison, even if his New York conviction were overturned.

Another hearing is scheduled for the end of this month.

    The London Stock Exchange Group said on Thursday its first quarter growth was in line with plans, and products from its partnership with Microsoft were due to be rolled out in the first half of 2024.
