Harry Kane insists England ‘can be proud’ of comeback against Germany despite winless run continuing

Harry Kane believes England can go into the World Cup on a high after their thrilling 3-3 draw with Germany at Wembley.

With confidence low heading into the final match before the main event in Qatar later this year, England’s problems mounted as Ilkay Gundogan and Kai Havertz put Germany two goals up midway through the second-half.

The Three Lions responded though, ending their run of more than 550 minutes without a goal from open play in style as Luke Shaw halved the deficit and Mason Mount then swiftly equalised for the rampant hosts.

Kane completed the turnaround from the penalty spot in typically emphatic fashion, though England were denied a famous victory as Havertz capitalised on an error from Nick Pope for his second goal of the match late on.

It means England have now gone six competitive matches without a win for the first time ever, with plenty of questions and no games left to answer them before the World Cup begins against Iran in November.

However, the manner of England’s comeback certainly lifted the mood and Kane was proud of how the team dragged themselves back into the match when the pressure was on.

“It was a lot better,” Kane said. “I thought we played really well today, we were unfortunate to go 2-0 behind, it was a mistake and then a great goal from the edge of the box.

“We did really well to stay in the game, to get back into it, get into the lead and then unfortunately another error. The mentality and fight of the team was shown out there today. We didn’t get the win but we can be proud of what we did and it puts us in a good place ahead of the World Cup.”

He added: “The boys have been under pressure with recent results and we all came out here with a point to prove. There are lessons we can still learn from the mistakes we made but we scored three goals and I feel like this will put us in a positive mindset ahead of the World Cup.”

Kane’s penalty was his 51st goal in an England shirt, just three behind Wayne Rooney’s record.

The England captain also scored from the spot against Germany in June, earning his side a draw in Munich, and Kane was relieved to once again deliver with the spotlight on him

“It was nice to score obviously,” Kane said.

“There always seems to be a few pressure penalties here at Wembley but it was nice to see that one go in and just a shame we couldn’t get the win but we keep going.”
