American Horror Story actor Harry Hains has died at the age of 27, following struggles with mental illness and drug addiction.

The actor’s mother – former Neighbours star Jane Badler - confirmed the news on Instagram, saying her “beautiful son” son passed away on 7 January.

“But sadly he struggled with mental illness and addiction.

“A brilliant spark shone bright too short a time... I will miss you Harry every day of my life.”

Badler, 66, did not reveal a cause of death.

Hains was born in Melbourne, Australia, but ended up in the US where he pursued modelling and acting.

As well as American Horror Story: Hotel, he appeared in series such as The OA and The Deleted. He was also a musician, performing under the name, ANTIBOY.

Last year in an interview with Girls By Boys magazine he indicated that he identified as gender fluid.

“If I had to pick a label it would be in the realm of gender fluid,” Hains said.

“I know that I am born male but I don’t think I represent what it means to be a man.

“I believe we should be whatever we want. It gets kind of confusing when we start labelling ourselves so I try to stay away from labels.”

Badler played Diana Marshall in Australian soap Neighbours and also had roles in television shows such as V, Falcon Crest and Mission: Impossible.
