Han Solo’s Alden Ehrenreich talks Donald Glover & ‘young’ Chewbacca

While ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ is the film on everyone’s mind as we see out 2016, one of Disney and Lucasfilm’s other spin-offs, the young Han Solo movie, has a lot of buzz around it.

Its star Alden Ehrenreich, the actor chosen to play the cocky smuggler made famous by Harrison Ford, has spoken about the exciting addition of ‘Community’s’ Donald Glover and how Chewbacca will feature.

Speaking to HeyUGuys, the ‘Hail, Caesar!’ star isn’t allowed to say a lot, but was excited about the prospect of Glover (who also goes by the Childish Gambino rapper alias) involved in the project.

“I’m allowed to say that I’m really excited about Donald Glover’s casting,” Ehrenreich mused. “I think he’s going to be great in the role because he’s such a talented and interesting guy. And I can say that Chewbacca’s in the film, although I know that’s not a huge spoiler.”

The prospect of young talents Ehrenreich and Glover making up the core casting in a ‘Star Wars’ movie is admittedly an enticing prospect. In the original trilogy we touch upon Han Solo and Lando Calrissian’s friendship, so we’re hoping for big things here.

And while everyone assumed that Chewbacca, Solo’s partner in crime, was bound to feature, he confirms the giant fuzzball’s inclusion. Chronologically, we last saw Chewy in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ but despite losing his long-term buddy it’ll be interesting to see the clocks go back and how he ends up leaving his military post in ‘Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith’.

In ‘A New Hope’ Chewy was 200 years old, so we know that the inaudible wookie ages differently to humans and as a result has clearly seen some things in his time. Hopefully we’ll get to see how he first meets Han, as Ehrenreich is no doubt anticipating the iconic team-up:

“He’s as much younger as I am in the film. So, I think he’s like 190 — or something — years old. I don’t think there’s a huge growth spurt for him from 190 to 210, so he’s probably about the same height.”

There’s still very little we know about the film - it’s not even got a proper title yet - that ‘The LEGO Movie’ duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will direct. At present we’ve only got the above two actors in confirmed main roles, but there’s still plenty of time for further announcements which we reckon will come thick and fast in 2017.

The as yet untitled Han Solo movie is out in the US in May, 2018 and there’s no confirmed UK date yet.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ is in UK cinemas on 15 December.
