Haqqani is the uncle of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting interior minister and the leader of a powerful faction within the Taliban.

(Reuters) -European stocks dipped on Thursday, as investors braced for a rate cut from the European Central Bank and awaited hints on policy moves next year as the euro zone economy struggles with slowing growth and heightened political risks. Rate-sensitive euro zone bank shares rose 0.4%. The ECB is expected to cut interest rates again, with traders pricing in an 81% chance of a 25 bps reduction and a 19% chance of a 50 bps cut, as euro zone inflation nears target and the economy falters.

Hospitals in England are battling a “tidal wave” of flu as admissions increased by more than two-thirds in seven days, new data shows. The number of hospital beds occupied by patients with the flu hit an average of 1,861 a day last week - up 70 per cent on the week before and more than three times the amount last year. NHS England has warned services “tidal wave” of infections and are bracing for a “quad-demic” of bugs this winter, with the increase in cases of flu, norovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and expected increases of Covid-19.

World shares were mixed Thursday ahead of a decision by the European Central Bank on interest rates that was expected to yield at least a quarter percentage point cut to the current 3.25% benchmark. Analysts said the monetary authority for the 20 euro currency countries in the European Union was bound to act now that inflation has fallen to target levels and growth is slowing. The futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were down 0.2%.
