Yahoo Movies Gwyneth Paltrow responds to Robert Downey Jr's shock MCU return
Gwyneth Paltrow has responded to the wild announcement that Robert Downey Jr is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The actor said goodbye to Tony Stark/Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, with the character making the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe.
However, at San Diego Comic-Con, Downey Jr made a surprise appearance on stage as it was announced he'll play Doctor Doom in the newly-retitled Avengers: Doomsday.

"I don't get it, are you a baddie now?" Paltrow, who played Pepper Potts in the Iron Man movies, wrote in the comments of Downey Jr's Instagram post about the announcement.
Joe and Anthony Russo, who are returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday, have said Stark is indeed playing Victor von Doom – suggesting that he won't be a variant of Tony Stark who became Doom rather than Iron Man.
Speaking to audiences at Comic-Con, Downey Jr remarked: "New mask, same task."
However, the MCU has been using more multiverse storytelling following Avengers: Endgame, and there are instances in the Marvel comics across the multiverse where variants of Stark become Doctor Doom.

Could this be misdirection from the Russos, or is Downey Jr returning as a completely new character? All will be revealed in due course.
Avengers: Doomsday, the fifth Avengers movie, and its follow-up Avengers: Secret Wars will mark a storyline shift away from villain Kang, following Marvel dropping Jonathan Majors in December 2023.
It was also announced at Comic-Con that the casts of Fantastic Four, Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* are going to appear in the next two Avengers movies.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently set for a release in cinemas in May 2026.
