Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldaña explains Gamora’s "bittersweet" ending in Vol 3

Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldaña has explained Gamora's "bittersweet" ending in Vol 3.

In the third and final outing for the Guardians, Saldaña played an alternate version of her character after Thanos (Josh Brolin) killed the original Gamora in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. The film saw alternate Gamora and Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), parting ways without becoming romantically involved.

Speaking recently to The Hollywood Reporter, Saldaña said she hoped that Gamora would become a Guardian again in Vol 3. She also spoke about the way the movie wrapped up Gamora's on-screen story.

When asked if she respected director James Gunn's decision not to force a romance between Gamora and Peter, Saldaña said: "I did. It was a bittersweet decision, obviously. I wanted to know that in the final chapter, Gamora stays on and finds a way to become a Guardian again in the future.

"But this felt like the right way to end things for her, because of what she had been through."

She added: "At the end of the day, any multiverse that she would've come from, she was still going to have the same experience with Thanos, and she was still gonna have the same guilt and the same trauma. So she finally found solace with the Ravagers, and she felt more open than she had ever been."

Although Peter and Gamora didn't strike up a romantic connection during the final instalment, Saldaña said she hopes the pair will reconnect again.

"I think the whole thing with Peter bothered her, because even though she had no recollection of who he was, she had a sense that it must have been special," she shared.

"And I appreciated that takeaway, because it kind of gave us the hope that if the Guardians seek help again from the Ravagers, maybe Gamora and Peter will find a way back into each other's lives, even if it's just as friends."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is released in UK cinemas on May 3 and in US cinemas on May 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
