Grey's Anatomy season 19 spoilers ahead.

In this week's instalment of Grey's Anatomy, Kate Walsh returned to the hospital as Dr Addison Montgomery.

There to teach a new group of visiting trainees, Addison and the other doctors (including Miranda Bailey) found abortion rights protestors outside the establishment doors.

They ignored the advice of security staff to temporarily shut down the clinic, which proved disastrous, as the protestors only grew in number and began launching missiles through the clinic's windows – Benson 'Blue' Kwan even took a brick to the head.

One trainee felt particularly responsible as she'd revealed Addison's location on social media earlier in the day.

With Addison being famous for travelling in a mobile clinic around states where abortions are illegal, Blue accused the trainee of gifting these protestors with "a roadmap" to the hospital.

Miranda told the shellshocked youngsters: "We are struggling as doctors, advocates for women and reproductive freedom... We need to lift each other up!"

After plenty more drama, including the delivery of a baby and a Lion King singalong, the episode took a devastating twist when Addison walked out of the building.

Stopping in the middle of the street to help pick up some dropped paperwork, a car appeared out of nowhere, running her and a trainee over.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actress and director Kim Raver, who plays Dr Teddy Altman, spoke of mirroring real-world concerns through this episode.

"It is really happening, and that scares me. That scares me as a woman, as an actor representing doctors and what our doctors are having to go through," she said.

"So I wanted to tell that story, that these stories are happening and this violence is happening against our medical teams."

As for that vehicular horror, Raver revealed: "I looked at some real protests of cars driving into people and it's terrifying. I wanted that moment to be really gut-emotional. It's specifically designed where it's kind of the calm of the storm.

"We think we've been through the worst of it and everyone is calm, and then it really take us all by surprise."

Grey's Anatomy season 19 airs on Thursdays on ABC in the US. The show streams on Disney+ in the UK, where new episodes premiere on Wednesdays.
