The insane follow-up to Gremlins, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, celebrates its 30th anniversary today. Released on June, 16 1990, this sequel follows Gizmo as he’s reunited with Billy and Kate and taken to the Klamp building for genetic research after his home at Mr. Wing’s magical store is destroyed. Not long after, gremlin shenanigans ensue once again as the little monsters take control of the skyscraper, with chaotic and zany results.
Director, Joe Dante, who had also directed the first Gremlins film, initially wanted no part in this sequel, as he felt there was no where for the series to go. He was coaxed back into the director’s chair when Warner Bros. essentially gave him carte blanche to make whatever kind of film he wanted. As a result, Dante decided to turn the sequel into a full blown anarchic live-action cartoon, complete with new and improved puppets by make-up effects wizard Rick Baker, fourth wall breaking jokes and random cameos galore. The film has divided fans, as some thought it strayed too far from the darker roots of the original and others praise the film for embracing its silly tone and taking the series into a wilder direction.
