Greg Abbott has had eight years to fix Texas’ problems. Now, he wants to blame Joe Biden?

Why haven’t you fixed it already?

In his debate with Beto O’Rourke, Gov. Greg Abbott kept blaming President Joe Biden for everything wrong in Texas. Biden has been president for only two years; Abbott has been Texas governor for eight years, the same time Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton have been in office. If they could clear things up on the border, fix the power grid and address so many other things they blame on Biden, why haven’t they already?

Insanity is voting for the same people and expecting a different outcome.

Beto’s ads just make me laugh

Every time I see a Beto O’Rourke ad, I have to laugh. He says he will fully fund education. That means you and I the taxpayers will be hit with a huge tax increase to pay for it. He blames Gov. Greg Abbott for the winter-weather crisis and for rising electric/gas prices. Regulators had assured Abbott in an annual winter assessment that the state had enough power to weather any storm. Abbott worked hard on new laws to ensure this never happened again. Don’t believe Beto’s spooky ads.

Closely check your HOA papers

I found the Sept. 23 front-page article on homeowners associations (“Is your HOA heaven or hell?”) useful. HOAs are a necessary evil. They allow homeowners to live in communities with standards that keep the community well maintained and safe.

The problem is when overreaching boards take away homeowners’ rights, like barring them from letting other residents use the association’s common facilities. I hope the Texas Legislature addresses these abuses by HOAs and protects this right in the law.

Homeowners should read the declaration when buying homes or when the document is updated (which requires homeowner approval), attend board meetings and volunteer. Stay informed and involved in your HOA.

Thomas, Trump harm democracy

Of course Donald Trump is praising Ginni Thomas for blindly continuing to support the Big Lie (Oct. 2, 12A, “Thomas tells Jan. 6 panel she still thinks Trump won”). The key words, though, are “thinks” and “believes,” as opposed to “knows.”

If Thomas and Trump had half a brain, they would look at the indisputable proof, be sane and honest, and graciously accept the fact he lost. Instead, they continue on a dangerous path to destroying our great democracy.

Whose idea was this traffic pattern?

Whichever police official or planner decided to shut down both the University and Montgomery exits off Interstate 30 before TCU’s football game against Oklahoma on Saturday surely thought it would alleviate congestion.

But all it did was create a huge traffic mess going back to Forest Park and keep tax-paying residents from reaching their homes as crazed fans sped through Arlington Heights.

Go back to the academy and learn traffic flow.

Give Opal Lee the Nobel prize

I struggle to express the words of admiration I have for Opal Lee (Oct. 2, 1A, “Opal Lee’s journey from segregation to a Nobel Peace Prize nomination”). What an example of a life of service lived without bitterness and with love for humankind. I don’t know the other nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize, but Lee is surely worthy.
