This is where the New York Jets are at right now: Someone will start at quarterback Sunday against the Houston Texans. Well, unless they run the wildcat all game. You never know in what has become a brutally bad year on offense for the Jets (4-8), who have lost five in a row and appear headed to a 13th straight season without a playoff appearance. Trevor Siemian could get the nod Sunday with a full week working with the starters. Or maybe Zach Wilson will be back from the bench. Probably not Tim
UTEP hired coach Scotty Walden away from Austin Peay on Monday, hoping the 34-year-old Texan's return to his home state can revive the Miners' moribund program. Walden led Austin Peay to the FCS team's first undefeated conference record this season with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-0 mark in the United Athletic Conference. The Governors were No. 10 in the NCAA's FCS coaches poll but lost to Chattanooga 24-21 in the first round of the FCS playoffs.
California regulators say a San Francisco robotaxi service owned by General Motors covered up an accident involving one of its driverless cars, raising the specter they may add a fine to the recent suspension of its California license. The potential penalty facing GM's Cruise service could be around $1.5 million, based on documents filed late last week by the California Public Utilities Commission. The notice orders Cruise to appear at a Feb. 6 evidentiary hearing to determine whether the robota
British retail sales growth remained sluggish in November despite Black Friday deals, as the ongoing cost-of-living squeeze prompted shoppers to rein in spending on non-essential items, the British Retail Consortium said on Tuesday. The BRC data is not adjusted for inflation, so November's sales growth represents a fall in the volume of goods purchased. "The cost-of-living crisis has taken its toll on Christmas spending for many households, and the continued economic conditions are testing consumer resilience," said Paul Martin, UK head of retail at accountants KPMG, who sponsor the data.

It’s beginning to look and sound like Christmas in Lakeland’s Munn Park. The park is the heart of downtown. Its holiday display brings it to life every winter, but Bernie Brandt noticed something was missing in the center of it. "There is so much opportunity to have stuff in that space that's not being used," Brandt said. The removal of a Confederate soldier monument in 2019 has left a vacant area in the middle of the park. Brandt believes a Christmas tree would be the perfect addition this time of year.

Global carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are set to hit a record high this year, exacerbating climate change and fuelling more destructive extreme weather, scientists said. The Global Carbon Budget report, published on Tuesday during the COP28 climate summit, said that overall CO2 emissions, which reached a record high last year, have plateaued in 2023 due to a slight drop from uses of land like deforestation. Countries are expected to emit a total 36.8 billion metric tons of CO2 from fossil fuels in 2023, a 1.1% increase from last year, the report by scientists from more than 90 institutions including the University of Exeter concluded.
The world this year pumped 1.1% more heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air than last year because of increased pollution from China and India, a team of scientists reported. Instead, carbon pollution keeps rising, with 36.8 billion metric tons poured into the air in 2023, twice the annual amount of 40 years ago, according to Global Carbon Project, a group of international scientists who produce the gold standard of emissions counting.

The UK's Internet regulator has set out draft guidance for how porn sites will need to meet a newly introduced hard legal requirement to prevent children accessing adult content. The watchdog intends this kind of bared flesh to be safety tucked away behind the child-safe age gates it wants to see greeting UK users on the landing pages of adult websites in the future. Today's guidance from Ofcom, the regulator tasked with enforcing the country's new Internet rulebook, puts some meat on the bones of what it will mean in practice when the British system for age-gating porn is up and running in the coming years.
