Good Samaritan Helps Struggling Shark at Rockaway Beach

A young beachgoer bravely helped out a small shark that appeared to be struggling in shallow water at a New York beach on June 20.

Footage shared to Instagram by Martin Stigsgaard shows the shark swimming near the shore at Rockaway Beach in Queens.

He told Storyful that he was visiting the beach with his daughter and her friends when they saw what he described as a dead shark washed ashore.

He said that there was then a “commotion” on the beach a few moments later as another shark was spotted struggling in the water.

“After some time a young boy bravely charged the water in an attempt to rescue the baby shark to the awe and delight of both children and adults,” Stigsgaard said.

The good Samaritan can be seen lifting up the shark and throwing it back into deeper water.

The exact type of shark seen in the video has not been confirmed, but some Instagram users said it was a dogfish, which are commonly found along the Rockaway Peninsula. Credit: Martin Stigsgaard via Storyful
