Godzilla vs. Kong gets new release date, moving up two months to March

A truly monstrous showdown is about to take place ahead of schedule.

Warner Bros. bumped up the release date of Godzilla vs. Kong to March 26, two months earlier than its previously scheduled May date. (The COVID-19 pandemic previously delayed the film from a November 2020 release.) Per Warner's new release strategy, the film will be available in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously.

That new strategy had been a sticking point with production company Legendary Entertainment, which financed the majority of Godzilla vs. Kong's budget and was reportedly blindsided by Warner's shift to streaming releases. Legendary was reported to be considering legal action against Warner Bros. in the wake of the HBO Max announcement, after the studio had turned down a $200 million-plus offer from Netflix to acquire Godzilla vs. Kong. However, sources recently told The Hollywood Reporter that Legendary and Warner have reached a deal that will allow Godzilla's release to go forward as planned.

A sequel to 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters and 2017's Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry. Director Adam Wingard (Death Note) previously told EW that he wanted viewers to "walk away from this film feeling like, okay, there is a winner."

"The original film [1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla] was very fun, but you feel a little let down that the movie doesn't take a definitive stance. People are still debating now who won in that original movie," he said.

This release date shift — only the latest for Godzilla vs. Kong, which was first announced in 2015 — comes after Warner Bros. pushed the upcoming Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark from March to Sept. 24.
