In a candid interview while promoting her new Netflix film, Hillbilly Eleg, veteran actress Glenn Close has revealed that Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 Oscar win for Shakespeare in Love left her confused.

Close, who currently holds the record of being the most Oscar nominated actress in history without a win, wasn’t in the running against Paltrow that year but nevertheless shared her thoughts on the ceremony and the way winners can often be perplexing.

“Well, I got nominated for my first movie which was The World According To Garp,” she said, referring to the 1983 film she starred in opposite Robin Williams.

"I honestly feel that to be nominated by your peers is about as good as it gets. And then, I've never understood how you could honestly compare performances, you know?" said Close. "I remember the year Gwyneth Paltrow won over that incredible actress who was in Central Station and I thought, 'What?' It doesn't make sense."

“So I think who wins has a lot of things to do with how things have been, you know, whether it has traction or what - you know, whatever. You know, publicity, how much money do they have to, you know, to put it out in front of everybody's sight.”

The 1999 Oscar marked the then-26-year-old Paltrow’s first and last Oscar nomination. During her speech, she said: “I would like to thank Emily Watson and Fernanda Montenegro and my friend Cate Blanchett and the greatest one who ever was, Meryl Streep. I don't feel very deserving of this in your presence.”

For the ceremony, she opted for that divine pink Ralph Lauren dress that became an instant classic.
