While we patiently await the arrival of The Crown season 5, all that's left to do is reminisce over the masterpiece that was season 4 - including, of course, Gillian Anderson's role as Margaret Thatcher.

After playing the former British Prime Minister during the Netflix series, Gillian was asked about her character during the 2021 Emmy Awards - and the question is baffling to say the least.

Picking up the award for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Thatcher, Gillian later took to the stage during a press conference to answer questions on her win.

However, things took a slightly bizarre turn when one reporter asked Gillian whether she'd spoken to Margaret Thatcher about the role, despite the fact that the former Prime Minister died eight years ago in 2013.

The reporter asked, "Just to kind of continue with the whole Margaret Thatcher thing, first question: have you talked to her about this role at all?"

Gillian, of course, remained professional throughout the interview, simply replying, "Er, well I have not spoken to Margaret," although she did sound understandably confused.

Take a look at the moment the question was asked, plus Gillian's brilliant response:

Fans on Twitter were expectedly quick to make jokes surrounding the awkward moment, with one writing, "the kindest way to answer 'well, I did not consult a Ouija board as research'".

Meanwhile, others joined in sarcastically tweeting images of Gillian communing with the dead and using a Ouija board. Plus, one viewer also rightly pointed out that, while Gillian answered that she didn't speak to Thatcher, she didn't go on to explain the reason why - making the exchange all the more baffling.

It's thought that Gillian will be returning to The Crown as Margaret Thatcher in season 5, so that's plenty for us to look forward to for now.
