What Trump can do to boost the US medical device industry
Precision Neuroscience Co-Founder and CEO Michael Mager discusses the changes coming to the healthcare and technology sectors under a second Trump administration at the Yahoo Finance Invest conference. In an interview with Yahoo Finance's Yasmin Khorram, Mager reflects on the possibility that Elon Musk, the CEO of Precision’s direct competitor Neuralink, will be a part of President-elect Donald Trump’s inner circle, saying it’s "no bad thing” having someone like Musk, who understands the tech, at a senior level in government. Despite Musk's involvement, Mager doesn't think his industry needs a boost: "We, as an industry, don't need any special favors or treatment." How investors should looking at the bond market right now
Listen and subscribe to Stocks In Translation on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your favorite podcast. Following Yahoo Finance Invest 2024, Yahoo Finance markets and data editor Jared Blikre and producer Sydnee Fried welcome Kathy Jones, chief income strategist at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, to the Stocks in Translation podcast. The team dives into key takeaways from Yahoo Finance Invest, including insights from Neel Kashkari, president of the Minneapolis Fed; Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM; and economist Joseph Stiglitz. They start by discussing recent bond market volatility and strategies for navigating it. “There are two things to consider when investing in bonds. One is the duration, meaning roughly the maturity of the bonds that you invest in,” Jones explains. “The other is credit quality. You [want to] be invested, you know, where you think you're safest, or do you [want to] take some risks and get higher yields?” She notes the option of focusing on shorter maturities with higher-grade quality as well. Jones also breaks down what factors she looks for in the bond market and what’s relevant for investors right now. “We look at the pace of economic growth. particularly consumer spending, 'cause consumer spending is like 70% of what constitutes economic activity,” says Jones. “We look at inflation and the inputs to inflation. Are they rising? Are they falling? And then we, uh, we look at Fed policy because the Federal Reserve sets the policy rate for short-term bonds and, and it has an influence on everything in the fixed-income world.” When asked how investors should approach bond investments, Jones cites the old saying, “Stocks get you rich. Bonds keep you rich.” Check out more content from Yahoo Finance Invest 2024 here. Federal govt. is not a social media company: Expert on Musk and DOGE
As the incoming Trump administration has begun strategizing on its Cabinet nominations, President-elect Donald Trump has selected billionaire backer Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead his proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. This proposed agency will oversee the slashing of excessive regulations and cutting wasteful government spending. "The standard that Elon Musk has set for us is that he believes he can cut $2 trillion from the federal budget annually. Let's just put this in perspective," Yale School of Management Lecturer of Management Practice Gautam Mukunda explains to Yahoo Finance: "To get his target, he's going to have to zero out defense, the Department of Energy, the Department of Education. And then to cut $300 billion out of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound to me like he's going to hit his target." Mukunda sits down with Julie Hyman and Josh Lipton to lay out some of the speed bumps the appointed Musk and Ramaswamy could face in approaching their goals. "So one is the Department of Government Efficiency has no staff, no statutory authority. So think about the Cabinet secretaries who Trump is going to appoint when these people come in and tell them, 'Hey, you're doing your job so badly, we're going to cut your budget by a third,'" he explains. "My guess is they won't respond to it that well, and they don't actually have to answer to these two." Russian woman jailed for 8 years for demanding Putin's death over Ukraine war
A military court in Moscow sentenced a 43-year-old woman to eight years in a penal colony on Thursday for posting anti-war comments online, including several calling for the assassination of President Vladimir Putin, Russian news agencies reported. Anastasia Berezhinskaya, a Moscow-based theatre director and mother of two young children, was found guilty of two wartime censorship laws -- discrediting the Russian army and spreading false information about it -- as well as justifying terrorism. More than 1,000 people have been criminally prosecuted in Russia for speaking out against the war in Ukraine, according to rights project OVD-Info, and over 20,000 have been detained for protesting.
