George Gilbey's mum reveals tragic star's final words
George Gilbey told his mum "I love you" in a final phone call hours before he plunged to his death.
Linda McGarry has revealed the 40-year-old 'Gogglebox' star rang her for a chat shortly before he fell 80 feet from a warehouse roof he was working on in Shoebury, Essex, on 27 March and he ended it with the poignant words she says will remember forever.
She told The Sun newspaper: "He phoned me at 9.30 on the morning and said he was working... he seemed fine... [he] was happy that he was working. He ended the phone call by saying, ‘I love you’ like he usually did. I treasure those words."
Linda went on to reveal George took the job fixing a roof at EGL Homecare’s warehouse to make some extra money so he could move closer to his daughter Amelie, who lives with her mum Gemma Conway in South West London.
Linda explained: "George was trying to get money together to get a room. He was going to rent from his friend, Skippy, near to Amelie in Twickenham.
"George was on great terms with Gemma and wanted to do things like pick Amelie up from school.
"He wanted to be with Amelie, who he adored. They were on the third day of a job that was going to last a month, and he was going to get money together from that."
Earlier this month, an inquest was told George died from traumatic head and torso injuries following the fall. The hearing was suspended following a request from the Essex Police, pending the outcome of a criminal investigation. Proceedings have been adjourned for four months as a result.
A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter relating to the star's passing, but he has since been released by police under investigation.
George first appeared in 'Gogglebox' in 2013's second series, but he left the show a year later to enter 'Celebrity Big Brother', on which he finished fourth.
