Gas prices in South Carolina tumble ahead of July 4. Here’s where it’s the cheapest

Columbia currently has the cheapest gas on average in the state following two weeks of price drops, according to AAA South Carolina.

AAA South Carolina data shows that a gallon of regular gasoline cost $4.32 on average in Columbia as of Monday morning — the lowest of any metro area in the state. The price is the latest in a downward trend in fuel costs across the state ahead of the busy July 4th travel weekend.

“With Independence Day a week away, gas prices have continued to fall for the second straight week as the price of oil has faltered, ushering in the drop we’re seeing. The good news is we could also see a third straight week of decline,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said on Monday.

In Columbia, gas prices have fallen $0.15 from $4.47 on Monday last week. Greenville, the metro area with the second-lowest average gas price at $4.34 a gallon on Monday, also saw a $0.15 drop over just the past week, AAA data shows.

Meanwhile, the South Carolina average gas price was at $4.42 a gallon Monday, down from $4.53 a week prior and considerably lower than the $4.89 a gallon national average.

“While prices will be at their highest July 4th level ever, they’ll have fallen close to $0.20 since our peak in early June,” De Haan said. “Motorists should be wary that while the decline could continue for the week ahead, any sudden jolts to supply could quickly cause a turnaround, and risk remains that when the peak of hurricane season arrives, we could see a super spike at the pump.”
